Uncensored version of Maze - The Mega-Burst Space.Brand new version using the raw video and audio straight from the LD. Made possible by the kind people... who may or may not wish to remain anonymous. (I'll ask).
Laserdiscs had a lot of noise, and removing it killed the details, so I kept all the noise. The colors are a little washed out compared to a DVD, but there are more details in the picture.
Subtitles came from the R1 release, but were modified. Added honorifics, re-timed and re-translated.

Thanks, this is awesome!
ReplyDeleteWOW, any chance that Fairynigths might get more LD only releases i.e. Wizardy?
ReplyDeleteI don't think so.
DeleteBut there's already a Wizardry LD rip.
I know, but it has harcoded subtitles *cringes*
DeleteLooking forward to the wacky episode 26...
ReplyDeleteGood job Dmon, enjoy this version everyone, is the first and unique LD uncut edition. Happy to share my LD with the whole world, quality is not like the DVd but hey, Ld is ok and is has a retro 80 feeling. :D
ReplyDelete@090bfac6-5db3-11e0-b059-000bcdcb2996
I had only these LD, bought from Japan about 7 years ago but never used before.
Uhm... yeah... about that...
DeleteSeems like this isn't actually the first LD version...
But this IS the first one with subs... so...
haha... well not quite. It's been a while but there were a few episodes ripped from an LD source in the late 90's the first 5 episodes floated around on IRC and ftp sites for a little while but the fan group that was subbing them couldn't get a hold of any more discs and quit. I used to have the first 5 episodes and a couple random ones I found later. Mostly raw but a couple were subbed, one of which I remember because of the file size. Someone thought it was a easier to rip the entire disc to one video file then to split out the individual episodes.
DeleteUnfortunately they were all lost in the great crash of 2001. Sad days... anyway I've been searching and hoping some would release them again... so you have my thanks :)
Joe
Thanks mate for your LD raws :)
DeleteUh? The only version i remember was a shitty RM 360p version from a crappy VHS source (i never consider it a proper release), where only 4 episodes was released and so incompleted, is for this reason that i chose to buy LDs and now to release them to everyone.
ReplyDeleteIf there is another version out here i don't know and never hear about it.
Neither did I, until I searched "maze" on Nyaa. Someone released LD raws up to episode 8.
DeleteBut, they look much worse then what I'm making, IMO.
can you upload episode 21?
DeleteI own the censored DVd box, they never did do ep #26 AKA the fanservice ep... I have a raw of that for years...
ReplyDeleteIt will good to see that translated...
Very happy to see a better release of this show... I'm one of those who still has the crappy RM releases from the 90s and never got any other release, due to them being censored. I wanted to thank both DmonHiro and Fnights for this.
ReplyDeleteOnly one thing though... Fnights, you sure you're capturing it in the right colour space ? Aside from that, it looks great, considering the source!
Dunno about colour space because the passage LD -> DVD was done by a friend of mine since i don't own a LD reader but he assure he did his best. In my country LD reader was a rarity, VHS reader was the main source in late 80.
DeleteBtw, i have the original LD set, so if anyone is interested i can sell them for 50 € + tax delivery. A very low price considering how much i paid 7 years ago.
Well, it looks to me like the colour space is incorrect (overall, the image is a bit washed out, blacks look greyish). Not a huge problem, but it could definitely be better...
DeleteTo be completely honest, I would love to snatch up those discs, in order to capture them myself, with the LEAST amount of quality loss (LD -> DVD means it's already lost a lot of quality before it got to Dmon, sadly). Only problem is, I'll be too lazy to re-apply the subs to it all..
If Dmon were willing to hold off on the releases and wait for a better LD rip, I'd be happy (actually, it would give me the greatest pleasure) to do it, if we could work out a slightly better cost for them all, since I'd only be doing it to get us all a better quality release. I don't personally care for the discs.
Just out of curiosity, would you be able to find out how much it would cost to ship those discs over to Portugal ? If it wouldn't be too expensive, and if you could trust a complete stranger (which I wouldn't blame you if you didn't), I would be happy to pay to have them shipped here and back to you when done. :)
This isn't the first LD version and this isn't the first LD version with subs, as, in the past days of VHS fansubs, Hecto/Shinsen-Gumi released fansubs of the full series with LD sources.
ReplyDeleteBut VHS sources aren't easy to find these days and even I, who have the Shinsen-Gumi fansubs on my closet, am very happy to see you releasing this, as VHS sources degrade. Besides, Hecto/Shinsen-Gumi were never famous for the quality of their fansubs.
Keep them coming.
Thanks, these LD's look more like a real DVD. I watched the R1 DVDs a few years ago and it was like watching VHS.
ReplyDeleteAny chance of doing Maze☆Bakunetsu Jikuu: Hot Springs?
ReplyDeleteThe OVA for this series, if you can find a source (any source, any quality)
I tried googling even for a raw source or a stream for the OVA and found nothing. :/
http://myanimelist.net/anime.php?id=3884
DeleteSorry here is the link from myanimelist.
I have a VHS rip of that. It's not great quality, but it's decent.
DeleteSure any is fine if you are able and have the time to release it with the series I'd appreciate it thanks!
Deleteany chance there will be a release of a Bluray Version ?!
ReplyDeleteYou're kidding, right?
DeleteNo problem, upscale and slam it on a BD-R ;) Heheh, just joking.
DeleteMaybe he was wondering if they would release a Blu-ray version in Japan..?
If that's the case, I suppose it would depend on how popular the show was back when it originally came out. If the show was never released on DVD in Japan, then I'm assuming it wasn't very popular and it's highly unlikely to get a BD release.
They seem to have actually lost the uncensored masters.
Deletelol.. that's pretty sad...
Deletewhat you were wondering is exactly what I was trying to say
DeleteI meant just like Ranma it was dead for so long and suddenly: Bluray .
I just don't understand why the dvd version was censored in the first place, TV i would understand but...
damn the new censorship laws in japan and the UK
No, you don't understand. The DVD version itself wasn't censored like the TV version. It WAS the TV version. Sometime after the release of the Japanese laserdisc, they lost the uncensored masters. So when America wanted to license Maze, all Japan had left were the masters for the TV version, so they gave them that. Japan then never released an uncensored DVD version because they didn't have the masters anymore.
DeleteSo thats why, Thanks Dmon
Deletethe show seems interesting i'll watch the LD for now
hope they will release BD or something.
Dude... seriously, are you paying attention? There is nothing to release on Bluray. The uncensored master tapes are lost forever. You think after 20 years, some guy's gonna go "Oh, THERE they are!"?
DeleteBTW, there're some scripts at http://subs.com.ru/page.php?id=7758
ReplyDeleteThey have the ILA scritps, that are probably based on the R-1 DVDS, but they also have .ssa scripts, timed for the LDs, for the first 16 episodes (by Neko Creations and others).
Do you happen to have the Maze movie?
ReplyDeleteI'm talking about this one of course - http://myanimelist.net/anime/8442/Maze%E2%98%86Bakunetsu_Jikuu:_Tenpen_Kyoui_no_Giant
I have never seen a rip of it anywhere
No, I don't. Nobody does. The movie was never released on VHS, LD or DVD. I'm afraid we will never see it.
DeleteAbout the washed out aspect... I just run Episode 1 through Avisynth's Histogram(), and it seems like the luma is all shifted upward. The supposed blacks are way over the "zero" of TV levels, and the whites are over the max of TV levels, so you can loose some detail when viewing whiter images (see scene at 5:00). The problem could be already in the LD source or in the LD->DVD conversion.
ReplyDeleteSo I run the following Avisynth script (I don't remember anymore where I got it), and it seems with -10.0 in both the black and the white section, and leaving everything else at default, it corrects both problems.
At least with episode 1. If the problem is the same in all episodes, you just need to run the same script before encoding.
##Avisynth script##
black = -10.0
white = -10.0
blue = 0.0
red = 0.0
saturation_u = 1.0
saturation_v = 1.0
cv = - (1-saturation_v)*256
cu = - (1-saturation_u)*256
ColorYUV(off_y = black, gain_y = white, cont_u = cu, cont_v = cv, off_u = blue, off_v = red)
##end of Avisynth script##
Anyway, keep the good work ;-)
I'll try it out, thanks.
DeleteJust some extra notes. You can use Histogram() after the script to see the result of changing the black and the white. At first I used -20.0 for the black and 0.0 (default) for white. It looked fine for some scenes, but then going back and forth, I discovered that in some scenes blacks were now too low. That's why I used -10.0 for the black, and then to correct the whites I used -10.0. It seems like a good enough compromise.
DeletePS: if you didn't use Histogram() before, the brown/yellow zones are the non valid "TV levels" ranges.
DeleteThanks for your help, yea i notice that the image is a bit white, maybe something changed in the LD -> Dvd conversion, but if this little script fix it go for it, you can do a V2 of episode 1 and 2 later if needed.
DeleteWorked just fine. Black and white looks much better now, thank you.
DeleteI just downloaded Ep. 2, and it seems the shift is the same, so in principle the script can be used like it is in all episodes without change... but better verify before encoding to be sure. It could change between LD discs.
DeleteAnd... I just now noticed in ep. 2 that the first 16 black frames are now "bellow black" with the script, but since they don't seem to matter, it's better to leave as it is. If these frames were present like this in the LD, it means the ones who authored them were the ones that got the black\white levels screwed.
Could you tell me what are changes between censored DVD and uncensored LD versions? It's just underwear -> clothes (and similar) or there are missing/heavily edited parts? I mean, are there any changes that will affect storyline?
ReplyDeleteWhere on Earth have you seen changes that would affect the story from a DVD version?
DeleteWell, I haven't seen. But who knows what they are changeing out there in America (or wherever it was released) if they are censoring underwear. If it's a problem for you to answer, then nevermind.
DeleteIf you are just lazy to download a new whole batch episodes then say so, if not well, the story is the same with some scenes replaced but this version is the original one. For a odd reason when they release Maze in the us they pick up the wrong one, the tv one instead of the original, also they lost the master of the movie so this serie seems to have an unfortunate production.
DeleteBut in the end is better this even if the quality is a bit worse than the DVD for an obvious source reason.
How come the DVD is censored?
ReplyDeleteIt seems that the Japanese company lost the uncensored masters sometime after releasing the Laserdics version. When the R1 company wanted to license it, Japan only had the censored TV version masters, so they gave them that one.
DeleteHey Fnights, do you have any other, old LDs lying around that you are looking to sell ?
ReplyDeleteAlso, the 50 + tax you mentioned for Maze, was that with shipping included ?
Sorry for posting here, but I couldn't figure out a way to send private messages. :(
Thanks.
Yes, is 50 € for laser disk + delivery expenditures (i don't know how much is, depend how far you are). If you live in Europe like me is more cheap, if you live in the Us the price will be big coz the entire set is heavy.
DeleteAsk Dmon for my private mail if you really are interested.
You kidding? Of course I'm not happy with what I've got. I'm happy I've got something, yes, and am very grateful for the DVDs fnights sent me, but if someone was to say "Hey, here's a much higher source", I'd jump on it like the first guy in line of the lesbian milkshake pool.
DeleteAlright then! Is there a better way to get into contact with you guys than posting anonymously here ?
DeleteAlso, I remembered something... I just hope the LDs haven't deteriorated since they were captured and put onto DVDs. LDs are known to get "laser rot" over time. *fingers crossed*
Anyway, would be good to talk to you guys and see if we can arrange something. :)
In case you're interested, here's a cap I made from one of my Fam and Ihrlie LDs a year ago:
Deletewww.youtube.com/watch?v=Wq5NRCzMKZY&hd=1
Actually, laser rot has nothing to to with time or with how much you used the disc. The first few batches of laserdiscs used a faulty glue which could seep through the protective layers and into the written data. You could buy a brand new disc, and it could have laser rot already.
DeleteThis is my user on BakaBT: http://bakabt.me/user/422273/DmonHiro.html
If you have an account, I can send you my e-mail through PM. I'd rather not post it here.
I do understand that some were badly manufactured, but I was under the impression that some discs could still get it, if not stored in the right conditions. (who knows.. lol)
DeleteAnyway, let me see if I have an account on there. If not I'll create one. :)
I think I sent a message... It just didn't show any confirmation. Let me know if you got it.
DeleteI subbed the ld version several years ago and showed it at the anime club I ran. I'm pretty sure I still have scripts lying around. Also, I recall seeing the ovas, think it might have been an avi, wonder if I still have it on a disc somewhere.
ReplyDeleteNow, if only I could find someone to translate and sub Yat... =_=
ReplyDeleteWhat's "yat"?
DeleteHe was probably referring to this: http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=2039
DeleteThat would indeed be it.
ReplyDeleteI do indeed still have the retimed / edited ssa files I did for the lds, if you are interested. At the very least, they are probably more accurate than the R1 rips. There's a few of them that need to be split as I did some of them in batches of two, but they are yours if you want.
ReplyDeleteOh, and the ovas are up and seeded on bakabt if anyone was looking for those.
ReplyDeleteJust a guess on my part, but could the "Hot Springs" OVA have been the uncensored version of episode 15, "The long awaited special event: The Hot Springs of Love"?
ReplyDeleteNo.
DeleteNice, thanks for this. Any chance of releasing the credit-less versions of the OP and ED as well?
ReplyDeleteOf course, but in the batch.
Deletecan you reupload the torrents? nyaa deleted them.
ReplyDeleteActually, I deleted them. I got a new source: the raw video from the laserdisc. The new version looks much better.
DeleteOk, thank you for your releases. Can't wait for them!
DeleteHi there Dmon, just curious on the status for releasing this series?
ReplyDeleteCan't you just look on your right?
DeleteNot him, but I don't completely understand what you mean with "every 5 episodes". You mean you make five releases, then Maze, then five releases, Maze again, etc.?
DeleteNo, I mean one release for every 5 episodes.
DeleteI would guess he means he will release 5 episodes of Maze at a time, in a kind of batch... In other words, he will not release any new episodes of Maze before he has a batch of 5 episodes of it done.
Deletev3 ??
ReplyDeleteRe-Encoding or something patchable ??
Brand new encode, using the raw video from the LD. It can't get any better then that.
Deletehas there ever been a release for the movie?
ReplyDeleteYou sir are a hero. I have been trying to find this for years and keeping my old fan-subbed VHS of the uncensored version. I look forward to the rest of the series finally being in digital form.
ReplyDeleteGood job Dmon, was believe u gave up when first 2 episodes disappeared from Nyaa, but i see now you do a v3. :D
ReplyDeleteJust curiosity. Did these laserdiscs raws also had the washed out aspect of the raws you used in first versions of ep 1 and 2. In other words, did you need to use the avisynth script to also correct these new raws?
ReplyDeleteNo, the laserdiscs did not have that washed out color hue. That was present because of the LD->DVD->PC transfer.
DeleteThese encodes have the original colors from the LD.
Nice :-)
DeleteIs there a laser disk for the Hot Springs OVA?
Deletebesides the fan service were there any other things that were different/missing from the dvd versions?
ReplyDeleteThere are a few added scenes, not just fanservice.
Deletethanx for the info, hope you come across the movie
DeleteOwned the r1 dvds for quite some time, and was surprised to hear there was such a difference between these versions. So thanks guys for putting this all together. I'm really happy to see these eps as they were originally intended.
ReplyDeleteHi -
ReplyDeleteJust discovered your site as I searched for the original Maze. Like others, I have the VHS and never figured out why the dvd release was censored (until I read all about here). So, this note is to thank you for your efforts and I do hope you will release them all when you are able. Best regards and Happy New Year!
Just finished the 1st 5 Mazes you have out so far. Wow, the picture is SO much better than the old VHS stuff I had. I still like Maze a lot - thank you again!
ReplyDelete5 more episodes coming early February.
DeleteThe best news in 2014! Thanks!!
Delete5 More Maze Haze Mega-Thanks! Will keep my eyeballs peeled (which is harder than it sounds - who came up with that saying anyway...?)
ReplyDeleteWhich February? 2015? 2017? :P
ReplyDeleteA fair question. I'll try to have 06-10 out by the end of This February.
DeleteTomorrow never dies. But This February... :P
DeleteYes, yes, I see...
Delete----
Current thoughts
Coming next: Maze 06-10.
----
I hope they'll arrive before February 38 or 39. :)
See, I told you I'd have it done by this February.
DeleteToday is the 38th of February. Right on time.
Thank you for these releases of Maze. Really good of you to share this stuff!
ReplyDeleteCan you do the movie or the Hot Springs OVA kind sir?
ReplyDeleteNo, the movie is pretty much lost forever. It was never released on any form of home media, and it was shown in cinemas for only a few weeks. There are no recordings, it has never aired on TV, and no VHS, LD or DVDs have ever been produced. The only people that ever saw the movie were the ones who saw it in theaters in 1998.
DeleteYes! I would love the Hot Springs OVA!!
ReplyDeleteCongratulations for the 100th comment! :) This is a very good work and... don't stop! Thanks!
ReplyDeleteYes congrats and would love to see the Movie if possible!
DeleteImpossible. The original masters for the Movie seem to have been lost by Japan. A home video release was never made, so there is literally no source for the movie. It will most likely never be seen by anyone again.
DeleteCan you do the Hot Springs OVA?
ReplyDeleteNot sure if this has been asked but can you do the Hot Springa OVA?
ReplyDeleteYes, I can. And how are you not sure if this has been asked? Look above your post.
DeleteSorry I didn't see and thanks Dmon appreciated and sorry I didn't see the above post!
Delete* Coming soon: Maze 11-15. *
ReplyDelete8-o . . . . YEEEEEAAAHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!! /me jumps out of the window... the closed window. :D
Ia mwainting it! (after coming back from the hospital :D )
Maze! Thanks - very happy to see more on the way!
ReplyDelete* Coming next: Maze 11-15.
ReplyDeleteC-O-M-I-N-G N-E-X-T !!!
YES!!
Thank god for you and your work. I swear, I couldn't find this series anywhere, and then I click your link out of curiosity and you're putting in extra effort to make everything look better for us. Thank you, good sir. Thank you.
ReplyDelete:( Maze went from "next" to "soon" state again... :(
ReplyDeleteIt was bumped down by the last volume of Ars Nova.
DeleteHai hai! Sumimasen, I am waiting the new Maze episodes and I cannot sit silently. ;)
DeleteEr... when the 20-25 comes... you will be merciful and there will not be (too long waiting) gap for the last ep (26)? :)
Well, someone already subbed episode 26 (Orphan), so well... you can grab that right now.
DeleteNo. Your work is too good to grab any else around the net. Mercy, my Lord! ;)
ReplyDelete> Completed Maze episodes: 13.
ReplyDeleteThank you!
11-15!!!!
ReplyDeleteYEEEAH!!!
Megathanks!!
More coming soon.
DeleteThings moving, -10. :)
ReplyDeleteI've eaten my choco Santa Claus... It's mean... there is December... Two weeks are until the end of school... What can be happened? New episodes? Maybe?
ReplyDelete* Completed Maze episodes: 16.
ReplyDeleteYES!
Check back in a few hours.
DeleteWow! 18! Ops, my clock is stopped. ;)
DeleteOK, 19, so my watch is working again! :D
DeleteThank you!
ReplyDeleteGood things come to those who wait. You, sir, are a Saint. Thank you sincerely.
ReplyDeleteOh shit, more episodes! Thanks a lot.
ReplyDelete- Manda
Da best "coming" pair came down to us:
ReplyDeleteComing next: Maze 21-25.
Coming soon: Maze OVA.
Pleaase seed last batch. >_<
ReplyDeleteI kind of have to MAKE IT first, don't you think?
DeleteOld school anime fan here... I have you bookmarked and I still check in every week or so for more MAZE IN YOUR FACE!...
ReplyDeleteIn other words, THANKS for making this available. :)
21!
ReplyDelete22! Thank you very much!
ReplyDeleteMark my words, I'll get this done yet!
ReplyDelete"Pending" is orange now... Secret code?
ReplyDeleteNo, the orange stuff is the last stuff I worked on.
DeleteThanx! To wait and watch is my task, as always. ;)
Deleteare episodes 21 to 23 almost ready?
ReplyDelete21-23 are ready, that's what "pending" means.
Deletewhen are you gonna put 'em up?
ReplyDeleteMay I hope the xMAZEas comes? ;)
ReplyDeletehow much longer till you can put up episodes 21-23?
ReplyDeleteThanks for the new batch :)
ReplyDeleteThank you s much. This is worth any kind of wait...and you do such great work! Happy New Year to you!
ReplyDeleteI read somewhere that the Maze movie was lost somehow. True?
ReplyDeleteOops!!! Thanks for all the hard work on the Maze series.
ReplyDeleteGreat! Time to watch it at last! Gonna make a batch torrent soon?
ReplyDeleteThanks for the batch! Is there anything new or changed in the batch, or are all the files I've already downloaded still OK?
ReplyDeleteThere's nothing changed in the batch.
DeleteDomo arigatou gozaimashita!
ReplyDeleteThanks for doing the Laser Disks :-)
ReplyDeleteToo bad there isn't a better source for the OVAs.
And what about the movie? Wish I could watch this...
ReplyDeleteI've mentioned this before, but there is no source for the movie. It was never released on any form of home media. No VHS, no LD and no DVD. It's very likely that the master for it was lost along with the masters for the uncensored version. Sadly, we'll probably never see the movie.
Delete
