Maze - The Mega-Burst Space (Series rating: 8/10)

Uncensored version of Maze - The Mega-Burst Space.Brand new version using the raw video and audio straight from the LD. Made possible by the kind people... who may or may not wish to remain anonymous. (I'll ask).
Laserdiscs had a lot of noise, and removing it killed the details, so I kept all the noise. The colors are a little washed out compared to a DVD, but there are more details in the picture.

Subtitles came from the R1 release, but were modified. Added honorifics, re-timed and re-translated.

  3. Good job Dmon, enjoy this version everyone, is the first and unique LD uncut edition. Happy to share my LD with the whole world, quality is not like the DVd but hey, Ld is ok and is has a retro 80 feeling. :D

    1. Uhm... yeah... about that...
      Seems like this isn't actually the first LD version...
      But this IS the first one with subs... so...

    2. haha... well not quite. It's been a while but there were a few episodes ripped from an LD source in the late 90's the first 5 episodes floated around on IRC and ftp sites for a little while but the fan group that was subbing them couldn't get a hold of any more discs and quit. I used to have the first 5 episodes and a couple random ones I found later. Mostly raw but a couple were subbed, one of which I remember because of the file size. Someone thought it was a easier to rip the entire disc to one video file then to split out the individual episodes.

      Unfortunately they were all lost in the great crash of 2001. Sad days... anyway I've been searching and hoping some would release them again... so you have my thanks :)

  4. Uh? The only version i remember was a shitty RM 360p version from a crappy VHS source (i never consider it a proper release), where only 4 episodes was released and so incompleted, is for this reason that i chose to buy LDs and now to release them to everyone.
    If there is another version out here i don't know and never hear about it.

  6. Very happy to see a better release of this show... I'm one of those who still has the crappy RM releases from the 90s and never got any other release, due to them being censored. I wanted to thank both DmonHiro and Fnights for this.

    Only one thing though... Fnights, you sure you're capturing it in the right colour space ? Aside from that, it looks great, considering the source!

    Replies
    1. Dunno about colour space because the passage LD -> DVD was done by a friend of mine since i don't own a LD reader but he assure he did his best. In my country LD reader was a rarity, VHS reader was the main source in late 80.

      Btw, i have the original LD set, so if anyone is interested i can sell them for 50 € + tax delivery. A very low price considering how much i paid 7 years ago.

      Delete
    2. Well, it looks to me like the colour space is incorrect (overall, the image is a bit washed out, blacks look greyish). Not a huge problem, but it could definitely be better...

      To be completely honest, I would love to snatch up those discs, in order to capture them myself, with the LEAST amount of quality loss (LD -> DVD means it's already lost a lot of quality before it got to Dmon, sadly). Only problem is, I'll be too lazy to re-apply the subs to it all..

      If Dmon were willing to hold off on the releases and wait for a better LD rip, I'd be happy (actually, it would give me the greatest pleasure) to do it, if we could work out a slightly better cost for them all, since I'd only be doing it to get us all a better quality release. I don't personally care for the discs.

      Just out of curiosity, would you be able to find out how much it would cost to ship those discs over to Portugal ? If it wouldn't be too expensive, and if you could trust a complete stranger (which I wouldn't blame you if you didn't), I would be happy to pay to have them shipped here and back to you when done. :)

  7. This isn't the first LD version and this isn't the first LD version with subs, as, in the past days of VHS fansubs, Hecto/Shinsen-Gumi released fansubs of the full series with LD sources.

    But VHS sources aren't easy to find these days and even I, who have the Shinsen-Gumi fansubs on my closet, am very happy to see you releasing this, as VHS sources degrade. Besides, Hecto/Shinsen-Gumi were never famous for the quality of their fansubs.

    Keep them coming.

  8. Thanks, these LD's look more like a real DVD. I watched the R1 DVDs a few years ago and it was like watching VHS.

    1. No problem, upscale and slam it on a BD-R ;) Heheh, just joking.

      Maybe he was wondering if they would release a Blu-ray version in Japan..?

      If that's the case, I suppose it would depend on how popular the show was back when it originally came out. If the show was never released on DVD in Japan, then I'm assuming it wasn't very popular and it's highly unlikely to get a BD release.

      Delete
    2. They seem to have actually lost the uncensored masters.

      Delete
    3. lol.. that's pretty sad...

      Delete
    4. what you were wondering is exactly what I was trying to say

      I meant just like Ranma it was dead for so long and suddenly: Bluray .

      I just don't understand why the dvd version was censored in the first place, TV i would understand but...

      damn the new censorship laws in japan and the UK

      Delete
    5. No, you don't understand. The DVD version itself wasn't censored like the TV version. It WAS the TV version. Sometime after the release of the Japanese laserdisc, they lost the uncensored masters. So when America wanted to license Maze, all Japan had left were the masters for the TV version, so they gave them that. Japan then never released an uncensored DVD version because they didn't have the masters anymore.

      Delete
    6. So thats why, Thanks Dmon

      the show seems interesting i'll watch the LD for now
      hope they will release BD or something.

      Delete
    7. Dude... seriously, are you paying attention? There is nothing to release on Bluray. The uncensored master tapes are lost forever. You think after 20 years, some guy's gonna go "Oh, THERE they are!"?

      Delete
  11. BTW, there're some scripts at http://subs.com.ru/page.php?id=7758
    They have the ILA scritps, that are probably based on the R-1 DVDS, but they also have .ssa scripts, timed for the LDs, for the first 16 episodes (by Neko Creations and others).

  13. About the washed out aspect... I just run Episode 1 through Avisynth's Histogram(), and it seems like the luma is all shifted upward. The supposed blacks are way over the "zero" of TV levels, and the whites are over the max of TV levels, so you can loose some detail when viewing whiter images (see scene at 5:00). The problem could be already in the LD source or in the LD->DVD conversion.
    So I run the following Avisynth script (I don't remember anymore where I got it), and it seems with -10.0 in both the black and the white section, and leaving everything else at default, it corrects both problems.
    At least with episode 1. If the problem is the same in all episodes, you just need to run the same script before encoding.

    ##Avisynth script##
    black = -10.0
    white = -10.0
    blue = 0.0
    red = 0.0

    saturation_u = 1.0
    saturation_v = 1.0

    cv = - (1-saturation_v)*256
    cu = - (1-saturation_u)*256
    ColorYUV(off_y = black, gain_y = white, cont_u = cu, cont_v = cv, off_u = blue, off_v = red)
    ##end of Avisynth script##

    Anyway, keep the good work ;-)

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Just some extra notes. You can use Histogram() after the script to see the result of changing the black and the white. At first I used -20.0 for the black and 0.0 (default) for white. It looked fine for some scenes, but then going back and forth, I discovered that in some scenes blacks were now too low. That's why I used -10.0 for the black, and then to correct the whites I used -10.0. It seems like a good enough compromise.

      Delete
    2. PS: if you didn't use Histogram() before, the brown/yellow zones are the non valid "TV levels" ranges.

      Delete
    3. Thanks for your help, yea i notice that the image is a bit white, maybe something changed in the LD -> Dvd conversion, but if this little script fix it go for it, you can do a V2 of episode 1 and 2 later if needed.

      Delete
    4. Worked just fine. Black and white looks much better now, thank you.

      Delete
    5. I just downloaded Ep. 2, and it seems the shift is the same, so in principle the script can be used like it is in all episodes without change... but better verify before encoding to be sure. It could change between LD discs.
      And... I just now noticed in ep. 2 that the first 16 black frames are now "bellow black" with the script, but since they don't seem to matter, it's better to leave as it is. If these frames were present like this in the LD, it means the ones who authored them were the ones that got the black\white levels screwed.

      Delete
  14. Could you tell me what are changes between censored DVD and uncensored LD versions? It's just underwear -> clothes (and similar) or there are missing/heavily edited parts? I mean, are there any changes that will affect storyline?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Where on Earth have you seen changes that would affect the story from a DVD version?

      Delete
    2. Well, I haven't seen. But who knows what they are changeing out there in America (or wherever it was released) if they are censoring underwear. If it's a problem for you to answer, then nevermind.

      Delete
    3. If you are just lazy to download a new whole batch episodes then say so, if not well, the story is the same with some scenes replaced but this version is the original one. For a odd reason when they release Maze in the us they pick up the wrong one, the tv one instead of the original, also they lost the master of the movie so this serie seems to have an unfortunate production.
      But in the end is better this even if the quality is a bit worse than the DVD for an obvious source reason.

      Delete
  15. How come the DVD is censored?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. It seems that the Japanese company lost the uncensored masters sometime after releasing the Laserdics version. When the R1 company wanted to license it, Japan only had the censored TV version masters, so they gave them that one.

    1. Yes, is 50 € for laser disk + delivery expenditures (i don't know how much is, depend how far you are). If you live in Europe like me is more cheap, if you live in the Us the price will be big coz the entire set is heavy.

      Ask Dmon for my private mail if you really are interested.

      Also, I remembered something... I just hope the LDs haven't deteriorated since they were captured and put onto DVDs. LDs are known to get "laser rot" over time. *fingers crossed*

      Anyway, would be good to talk to you guys and see if we can arrange something. :)

    5. Actually, laser rot has nothing to to with time or with how much you used the disc. The first few batches of laserdiscs used a faulty glue which could seep through the protective layers and into the written data. You could buy a brand new disc, and it could have laser rot already.

  69. Thanks for the batch! Is there anything new or changed in the batch, or are all the files I've already downloaded still OK?

  71. Thanks for doing the Laser Disks :-)
    Too bad there isn't a better source for the OVAs.

    1. I've mentioned this before, but there is no source for the movie. It was never released on any form of home media. No VHS, no LD and no DVD. It's very likely that the master for it was lost along with the masters for the uncensored version. Sadly, we'll probably never see the movie.
